After a busy summer and not doing much hiking, the autumn colours and the predicted sunny weather made me decide to go on a short hiking trip in the region. Since I aimed to avoid popular hiking routes, I decided to once again hike into the Pöyrisjärvi wilderness area, and found Olkojärvi as being a seemingly nice spot (according to the map). Another beautiful day was inviting us to bike up to the Pyhäkero open wilderness hut, from where we continued our journey to the summit of the Pyhäkero fell. After reaching the summit just in time for the sun set, we enjoyed the scenery while eating some delicious cloudberries that we picked on the way. With a friend and neighbor we decided to spend a day with a short hike, and to go fishing somewhere close by: Our idea was to walk into forest just behind our apartment buildings, and to maybe find our way to Pahtajärvi – which we successfully achieved. When I joined some friends for the hike from Pallas to Hetta, ruska (the Finnish word for autumn) just started in Lapland, and the first trees changed their colors. I took note of that fact with lots of satisfaction, as in the first half of September a long planned hiking trip through the Pöyrisjärvi wilderness area was laying just ahead of me. Recently, a few visitors and friends asked me, how often I have already walked through Pallas-Yllästunturi National Park. Well – the truth is, never before. OK, I have often been in the national park, but never really walked through it. In Winter it’s easy and comfortable to get to Rautujärvi from Hetta, by just crossing the lake Ounasjärvi and having a short distance skiing trip up to the lake. For approximately two months, the sun does not sink below the horizon in Hetta, peaking around the 20th of June. Looking forward to the 21st of July, when the night finally should start its fight for a comeback in the Enontekiö region, a short trip to the lake on Pyhäkero was supposed to utilize some advantages of the (still) continuing brightness.
