Since about one week the landscape here is covered with about ten centimeters of snow, thus also the Pyhäkero fell shines with its white cover over the lake Ounasjärvi. Because of the little snow coverage it is still possible to cycle, so I took my bike and went for a short trip to reach the summit of the white Pyhäkero. Open Ounasjärvi
The nights became colder and the night temperatures go below zero. Since it is predicted for next week to become colder, I went for a walk on the shore of lake Ounasjärvi, to enjoy the open lake once more before winter arrives and ice forms up… Continue reading “Open Ounasjärvi”
Sun is Setting Again – Night Sky on Pyhäkero
Since a few days the sun is finally setting again, after it has been staying above the horizon for about two months. Reason enough to go and visit the summit of the Pyhäkero fell, to enjoy a sun set and a colourful night sky on the Northern edge of the Pallas-Yllästunturi national park.
Another big advantage – besides the amazing view – is that on the top of Pyhäkero fell, because of wind and the absence of trees, there are way less mosquitoes than down in the valleys.

Polar Day and Winter Leftovers
Since the snow is already gone, I took a short bike trip up on Jyppyrävaara, to get a look on the ice cover of lake Ounasjärvi – before it is gone for the summer.
Since I enjoyed the view so much, I also went down to the shore of Ounasjärvi, and spent some time there, watching migratory birds that already came back to Lapland ..
Sunset on Pyhäkero – Enjoying Skiing in the Evening
Often when I’m skiing I’m passing by Pyhäkero fell, but I hardly ever make it up to the summit during winter time. This time I decided to make the peak of Pyhäkero the goal of a short skiing trip, and to enjoy the sunset from up there – since soon there won’t be a sunset for a long time.
Taking the Sammalvaara skiing trail up to Pyhäkero, this was a nice approximately 40 km round trip, with an altitude difference of about 430 m from lake Ounasjärvi up to the summit. Continue reading “Sunset on Pyhäkero – Enjoying Skiing in the Evening”
Spring Time Skiing to Hannukuru – Sunshine and Sauna
While I have been traveling for about a week, I was looking forward to come back home to Enontekiö and to take advantage of the snow before it is gone. When a friend told me, he was planning to ski to Hannukuru from Pallas, I thought, it would be a pretty good destination for meeting him and furthermore to jointly enjoy the amazing sauna in Hannukuru. Taking the Sammalvaara Skiing Trail During a Spring Time Sunset
Finally I found the time to go for a short skiing trip. Since I only had a few hours and wanted to ski up to the fells, I decided to take the Sammalvaara skiing trail, north-west of the Ounastunturi mountains. Continue reading “Taking the Sammalvaara Skiing Trail During a Spring Time Sunset”
