Late Summer and Early Winter – Hiking through the Pöyrisjärvi Wilderness Area

I strongly felt the urge to go for a hike a couple of weeks ago, so I decided, as so often in the past years, to hike in – or actually through the Pöyrisjärvi wilderness area. Once again. With a friend we enjoyed a wonderful hike, including the last summerly days of this year, as well as the first snowfall, which delighted us toward the end of our hike. We started in Hetta, came by Pöyrisjärvi, and ended our hike in Kalmkaltio, in the east of the Pöyrisjärvi wilderness area. I Saw the Sun! Day and Night in Hetta, and Coldness Sustains.

Looking into the sun

Last week, when I went for a short skiing trip, I got to see the sun for the first time in about six to eight weeks. Even though the sun is back, it still is really cold outside, and because of the sun remaining low, there is yet no warmth coming form the sun. However, the cold left some beautiful rime on the trees, making the landscape look magically. Continue reading “I Saw the Sun! Day and Night in Hetta, and Coldness Sustains.”

Predicted Northern Lights Do Not Happen! Night Skiing on Jyppyrävaara.

After a medium sun storm has been reported, its solar burst was predicted to hit the earth’s atmosphere yesterday evening, giving a good chance of seeing some nice northern lights. Thus I decided to take my camera with me, when I went for a short skiing trip up on Jyppyrävaara mountain, close to Hetta. But as so often, when above average solar activity has been observed, I once again did not see any exciting northern lights. Nevertheless, I have been able to enjoy one of the very rare clear nights in the past weeks ..

During the Polar Night to Hannukuru: Skiing, Sauna, Full Moon, and Northern Lights in Pallas-Yllästunturi National Park

Northern Lights and Full Moon at Hannukuru

After a very busy December the idea came up, to find some relaxing days in the Pallas-Yllästunturi National Park – or more precisely – to visit the Hannukuru area for a decent sauna turn in the middle of the wonderful nature, and in the middle of the polar night. The plan was to take our (borrowed) forest skiers to go to Hannukuru for a relaxing sauna evening, and to return back home the same way. Fortunately (I have to say), a heavy snowfall made us stuck in the beautiful Hannukuru valley, where we experienced a most wonderful night under the clear full moon sky – topped with some northern lights, just after the snowfall ended. Moonlight Skiing to Pahtajärvi

Pahtajärvi
On the summer hiking trail with forest skiers to Pahakuru

The clear ski on Friday revealed the strong brightness of the moon just a few days after it was full. With such an amount of light available, I wanted to take advantage of the beautiful weather and decided to go to the Pahtajärvi laavu for some late night dinner. Since the sun is almost gone anyway, the moon will be the only light-ball shining from the sky in the next few weeks. Of course the clear sky came along with cold temperatures (down to -30°C), but that shouldn’t keep me off from a short skiing trip. Continue reading “Moonlight Skiing to Pahtajärvi”

Sioskuru – The Last Skiing Trip This Winter

Skiing to SioskuruAs I wrote in the last entry, with the beginning of May the poles for marking the skiing tracks were removed, signalling the end of the winter – and the way too short skiing season. This fact however, let my girl friend and me decide to cross the lake Ounasjärvi for the last time this winter and to go on a small skiing trip into Pallas-Ounas national park, to stay over at the autiotupa Sioskuru.
