The snow lasted a bit longer this year than in previous years, and so did the ice. While last week I still experienced frequent snowfall, the thermometer suddenly climbed above 20°C. This led to the rare combination of half open lakes while having perfect swimming weather. So that’s what had to be done …
The weather forecast couldn’t make it more clear: Up to plus 8°C and rain next week suggests that the skiing season is at its end. After I shortened my skiing trip in March, finally the circumstances seemed right to go for another skiing trip: Together with a friend we spent one week on our skiers in the Pöyrisjärvi Wilderness Area. With our bivy bags in our luggage, we made a loop from Hetta to lake Pöyrisjärvi, and enjoyed the warmth of the intense spring sun. Earlier this year I got a new pair of skiers that should compromise between distance and downhill skiing, with a light telemark binding. Living near Pallas-Yllästunturi National Park, I thought it might be a good idea to test the new equipment there before going for longer trips with it. Thus I decided to ski into Pallas-Yllästunturi National Park, spend two nights in the Rautuoja open wilderness hut, and used the days to ski up and down the nearby fells Outtakka and Rautuvaara.
