Recently, on the way with the car in somewhere in Lapland, I discovered how connective the Lappish winter can be: some border villages along the Muonio river only have a road connection in the cold season of the year. On the first two images you can see the road connection over the frozen river between Saivomuotka (SWE) and Sonkamuoatka (FIN). The next regular bridge is about 40 km away. So that’s how winter is (physically) connecting the Northern countries :-)
Besides these images are some other pictures from the roads in Enontekiö in spring time …
I’m brazilian and with fligth tickets to go lapland on nov23.. I will rent a car, but worried about the snow on the roads. Is it normal to stop the cars/traffic with this problem ?
Hi Rodrigo,
usually the main roads are kept open in Lapland and are well maintained. Most cars have spike tires so they have a good grip.
There are, however, a few days in the year when driving is difficult: Like when there is a snowstorm passing through, or when the snow on the roads melts and freezes and the roads are very icy. So on some days it is safer not to drive and wait for the road maintenance to do their job or for the weather to get better.
