In my opinion the polar night is the most wonderful time of the year in the High North, thus I wanted to take advantage of this time of the year and go for a skiing trip to Pöyrisjärvi Wilderness Area. Since the mid 1940s in Kilpisjärvi, in the northwest of Finland, close to the Norwegian border, a ski race is carried out during midsummer. While not participating, I visited this year’s edition of the midsummer ski race as a spectator, before continuing a “night hike” in the vicinity of Kilpisjärvi and the Saana mountain. Since this year spring arrived very early, I am kind of afraid that my today’s skiing trip might have been the last one for this season. Since I hardly ever took any pictures this winter from my trips, I made a few quick shots with my mobile phone camera today ..
It was a cold night, with some -30 degree Celsius. But after a long day sitting behind the computer, a short skiing trip was just the right thing to do ..
Often when I’m skiing I’m passing by Pyhäkero fell, but I hardly ever make it up to the summit during winter time. This time I decided to make the peak of Pyhäkero the goal of a short skiing trip, and to enjoy the sunset from up there – since soon there won’t be a sunset for a long time.
Taking the Sammalvaara skiing trail up to Pyhäkero, this was a nice approximately 40 km round trip, with an altitude difference of about 430 m from lake Ounasjärvi up to the summit. Continue reading “Sunset on Pyhäkero – Enjoying Skiing in the Evening”
