After a few Centimeters of fresh snow the skiing tracks invite to go for a slow round on Pahtajärvenreitti. Toward the end of the polar night, lasting cold temperatures (below -20°C) made the snow crystals covering the trees even more beautiful. Appreciating the wonderful weather and the almost clear sky I decided to ski up a small hill nearby. To my surprise, the top of the hill was already rached by the sun again: The first sunbeams hitting the area after the polar night. A pleasant surprise that lighted up the landscape and – after its short appearence – painting the snowy landscape in pink.
The weather forecast couldn’t make it more clear: Up to plus 8°C and rain next week suggests that the skiing season is at its end. After I shortened my skiing trip in March, finally the circumstances seemed right to go for another skiing trip: Together with a friend we spent one week on our skiers in the Pöyrisjärvi Wilderness Area. With our bivy bags in our luggage, we made a loop from Hetta to lake Pöyrisjärvi, and enjoyed the warmth of the intense spring sun. Earlier this year I got a new pair of skiers that should compromise between distance and downhill skiing, with a light telemark binding. Living near Pallas-Yllästunturi National Park, I thought it might be a good idea to test the new equipment there before going for longer trips with it. Thus I decided to ski into Pallas-Yllästunturi National Park, spend two nights in the Rautuoja open wilderness hut, and used the days to ski up and down the nearby fells Outtakka and Rautuvaara.
While the temperatures so far haven’t went over 2 or 3 degress plus, the forecast for the next week suggests that the skiing season will find an early end this spring. Time to enjoy a last trip into the nearby fell area, and to combine that with a sauna turn in Hannukuru, in the middle of Pallas-Yllästunturi National Park. After I had to cancel my skiing trip earlier this winter, I was looking forward to spend some time in Pöyrisjärvi wilderness area in spring, to be still able to enjoy a couple of days skiing through the tundra.
