Recently, on the way with the car in somewhere in Lapland, I discovered how connective the Lappish winter can be: some border villages along the Muonio river only have a road connection in the cold season of the year. On the first two images you can see the road connection over the frozen river between Saivomuotka (SWE) and Sonkamuoatka (FIN). The next regular bridge is about 40 km away. So that’s how winter is (physically) connecting the Northern countries :-) Continue reading “Short Roadtrip in Lapland. Or: The Connective Character of Winter”
Skiing to Pahakuru – in Pallas-Yllästunturi National Park
On the Easter weekend we took advantage of the warm spring weather and well maintained skiing tracks, to carry a pulk with our backpacks and some food to the open wilderness hut Pahakuru, to stay there for one night. On the next day – on the way back – it was much more windy, though still sunny at the beginning. However, after Sioskuru there was no sight anymore, so heavy winds and strong snowfall kept me away from taking more pictures .. Skiing from Hetta to Pyhäkero
The wonderful weather in late February definitely needed to be used for skiing; so I decided to take my camera for a short trip from Hetta to Pyhäkero and back. The tracks were in wonderful condition, the fresh snow from the days before allowed a gentle skiing trip up to the open wilderness hut Pyhäkero, on which I met hardly any people .. Laavu on Jyppyrävaara in Enontekiö / Hetta
Just a short walk from the Fell Lapland Nature Center – and thus close to the center of Hetta, is a Laavu on the hill Jyppyrävaara. From up there, you have a nice view on the lake Ounasjärvi, as well as on Pyhäkerö and the surroundings, while you can enjoy your semi-delicous makkara in the warming, springlike sun … Continue reading “Laavu on Jyppyrävaara in Enontekiö / Hetta”
No Sun – Still Light
Even though you can’t see the sun in Lapland for some time, it doesn’t mean that the sky wouldn’t provide you with beautiful colors and plenty of dailight (for at least a short time ..) :-) Continue reading “No Sun – Still Light”
Northern Lights at Väiskin Laavu
Even though this years winter hasn’t arrived yet, at least the Northern Lights remained as a constant. So with some friends we got lucky last night, and ate our semi-delicious Makkara in the wonderful presence of the Aurora Borealis. Continue reading “Northern Lights at Väiskin Laavu”
Autumn in Rovaniemi
Unfortunately I was/am quite busy in autumn this year, so i didn’t have any time to go for a hike. However, the other day, when there finally was some sunlight coming through the persisting, thick layer of clouds, I decided to go out for lunch and thus made myself a cosy fire at Kunikaan Laavu (on Santavaara), to grill some makkara. On the way back I took advantage of having the camera with me, and also shot some autumn impressions around the city center of Rovaniemi … Continue reading “Autumn in Rovaniemi”
