It was a cold night, with some -30 degree Celsius. But after a long day sitting behind the computer, a short skiing trip was just the right thing to do ..
I strongly felt the urge to go for a hike a couple of weeks ago, so I decided, as so often in the past years, to hike in – or actually through the Pöyrisjärvi wilderness area. Once again. With a friend we enjoyed a wonderful hike, including the last summerly days of this year, as well as the first snowfall, which delighted us toward the end of our hike. We started in Hetta, came by Pöyrisjärvi, and ended our hike in Kalmkaltio, in the east of the Pöyrisjärvi wilderness area. Since a few days the sun is finally setting again, after it has been staying above the horizon for about two months. Reason enough to go and visit the summit of the Pyhäkero fell, to enjoy a sun set and a colourful night sky on the Northern edge of the Pallas-Yllästunturi national park.
Another big advantage – besides the amazing view – is that on the top of Pyhäkero fell, because of wind and the absence of trees, there are way less mosquitoes than down in the valleys.

Just last week I was a little surprised about the high temperatures when I was visiting Kirkenes and Murmansk. However, after coming back to Enontekiö, I enjoyed some more moderate temperatures around here. Nonetheless, I didn’t expect to see some more snow until autumn ..
Since the snow is already gone, I took a short bike trip up on Jyppyrävaara, to get a look on the ice cover of lake Ounasjärvi – before it is gone for the summer.
Since I enjoyed the view so much, I also went down to the shore of Ounasjärvi, and spent some time there, watching migratory birds that already came back to Lapland ..
