Camera Test of the Fairphone FP2

Please note: These pictures were taken when the FP2 was brand new on the market (Jan. 2016). Current FP2s are being shipped with an upgraded camera module. Also, the phone software received several updates. (update from Jan. 2018)

You can find more up to date FP2 pictures also in my blog: these posts are tagged with FP2.

Some sample images

Depth of field

Generally I realized that the depth of field is quite poor. in these images I once focused on the pine tree in the background and once on the birch tree – right, that is that thing in the front

Note though, that this is not a particular issue of the FP2 sensor or optic. The limited depth of field is due to the aperture of the camera. Most smartphone cameras have a similar performance in this regard. Yet this is one of the reasons why I actually don’t like to take pictures with phones, that you have little control over the images.

White balance

These 2 images were taken immediately after each other,
don’t know why there is such a difference in white balance.

DSLR vs. FP2
(tough task though, at -40°C)

Daylight

Twilight
(ok, that’s a pretty tough light situation, like sunset; let’s see how much we can squeeze out of the FP2 sensor)
